Tikkun Olam

We have a sacred duty to heal our world and help the stranger. We live in a time and place of staggering inequality. We embrace our responsibility as individuals and as a community to leave this place better than we found it. (Gemilut Hasadim, Tzedakah, Tikkun Olam)

Serve meals to the homeless, participate in special drives (ie:books, clothes, blood), participate in community service/mitzvah projects.

The Tikkun Olam Collective

We are a collective of members committed to bolstering the values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) at Kol Shofar. By facilitating opportunities for our congregation to apply our Jewish values to contribute to the broader Marin community—we aspire to improve our neighbors’ health, well-being, and environment and strengthen Kol Shofar’s connection to the community.

We’ll support members who wish to lead community service and volunteer activities. Our efforts do not involve fundraising; rather, we focus on giving members hands-on volunteer opportunities within our local community.

If you have community service ideas that you’d like to lead, please contact us. We’ll partner with you to help you execute them! Email tikkunolam@kolshofar.org with your ideas and/or if you want to join the Tikkun Olam Collective.

Panim el Panim
Panim el Panim (face to face) is an initiative at Kol Shofar whose goal is to create opportunities to get to know each other and learn about one another’s values and concerns. How do we do that? We encourage congregants to meet one-on-one or in small groups to share their stories and hopes for themselves and their communities. As these conversations take place, congregants might identify shared interests and concerns that they wish to explore further. In some instances, this exploration leads to joint activities or programs that address them.

As these shared concerns motivate group members to action, Kol Shofar members participate in community organizing through Marin Organizing Committee (MOC). Kol Shofar is a founding member of MOC, our local branch of this national movement, whose goal is to work at a local level toward greater community engagement and social change. This commitment is reflective of Kol Shofar’s vision “to teach, inspire, and pursue the principle of Tikkun Olam, the age-old belief that the Jewish People is a partner with God in addressing society’s ills.” To get involved with Panim el Panim contact: Gail Dorph: gaildorph@gmail.com.
