Teen Engagement
The Bar or Bat Mitzvah is just the beginning, not the end! Through friendships with their peers and supportive relationships with teachers and Clergy, Jewish learning and connection continue for teens at Kol Shofar. With the academic and social pressures mounting, it is precisely during the teen years that our youth benefit so greatly from the intellectual and social connections, as well as the pursuit of meaning and purpose in life that these programs offer. At Kol Shofar, our teens will be encouraged to grow as Jewish leaders, apply Jewish values to relevant life situations and events, as well as participate in the joy of being part of a community.
Tichon for 7th – 12th Graders
Tichon (literally, “high school”) is a learner-centered program designed to encourage post-B’nei Mitzvah teens to explore the connection between Judaism and the modern world. While pre-B’nei Mitzvah education provides a foundation of Jewish identification for children, Tichon is intended to offer the depth and applicability of Jewish ethics, spirituality, and wisdom to real-life challenges and dilemmas. They will study alongside their peers and be able to ask the tough questions that we all inevitably encounter in the world, including matters of injustice, disease, intolerance, and war. With supportive teachers, our teens analyze ancient and modern texts, seeking how these values may apply and bring perspective not only on the issues, but also as to how they may personally navigate them.
Tichon is open to enroll for both Kol Shofar members and non-members.
Tichon Schedule:
WEDNESDAYS: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
6:00 PM: Dinner (included in tuition)
6:30 PM: Programming
Marin USY (MUSY)
MUSY is a chapter of New Frontier USY, which serves the Northern California region and includes local chapters from Reno, NV. USY is USCJ’s youth movement for Conservative Jewish teens across North America. For more than 60 years, USY has taught young Jews the values and skills they need to become exceptional leaders in their religious and secular communities.
USY participates in regional programming throughout the school year at various synagogues and retreat centers, while individual chapters such as MUSY, create their monthly events and activities.
